I like to read quotes. Sometimes I check my massive Bartlett's Book of Quotations. Other times I peruse one of the many little inspirational quotation books people have given me. I write them out, print them out or cut them out and put them up next to my computer. I don't know why, but reading profound words just makes me feel good. Because I like others to feel good too, I thought I'd share my current favorites with you :)
We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated. -- Maya Angelou
Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm. -- Winston Churchill
Success isn't a result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire. -- Arnold H. Glasow
Life is like playing a violin solo in public and learning the instrument as one goes on. -- Samuel Butler
I searched high and low for an epigraph for my book, The Remains of the Dead. I found that nobody's words of wisdom fit better than these by Andy Warhol:
Dying is the most embarrassing thing that can ever happen to you, because someone’s got to take care of all your details.
How about you, do you have any favorite quotes?

I love searching for quotes, and even built a quote database I can search when I need to find just the right word. When I started it, I was just doing it for fun, then I used quotes at the beginning of every chapter of my first book. Now I use them at the top of my blog. My favorite quote this week is from Erle Stanley Gardner -
"It’s a damn good story. If you have any comments, write them on the back of a check."
That's a great one! I'm sure every author has been tempted to say that to a reviewer LOL.
Dorothy Parker is my favorite - the original feminist and all around original. These are all hers:
"I've never been a millionaire but I just know I'd be darling at it."
"A little bad taste is like a nice dash of paprika."
"Take care of the luxuries and the necessities will take care of themselves."
And my favorite, though it's a bit like paprika:
(Yelled out the window to a messenger boy who'd come for her article for the New Yorker)
"Get out of here! I'm f*cking busy, and vice versa."
LOL Tracy! Those are good :)
Wendy, I love the one about setting yourself on fire!
Eve
I tend to collect quotes from two people: Charlie Chaplin and David Sedaris. Both created some genius quotes...
"In the end, everything is a gag"-Charlie Chaplin
"Failure is unimportant. It takes courage to make a fool of yourself."-Charlie Chaplin
"I remain just one thing, and one thing only, and that is a clown. It places me on a far higher plane than any politician."
-Charlie Chaplin
"Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot."
-Charlie Chaplin
"I love things made out of animals. It's just so funny to think of someone saying, 'I need a letter opener. I guess I'll have to kill a deer.'"
-David Sedaris
“I haven't got the slightest idea how to change people, but still I keep a long list of prospective candidates just in case I should ever figure it out.”
-Sedaris
Nothing is coming to mind at the moment, but I have two books of quotes or thoughts of Albert Einstein (one's the original, the other is an updated version of said orginal) and I remember back in senior year of high school, my ex-friend and I kept a running list of any quotes we liked from movies and tv. Alas, not very inspirational, just cool. :)
Hmm, just thought of one. A mighty true one. . .
"Beam me up, Scotty, there is no intelligent life down here."
Yep. :)
Lois
ha ha ha! The truth according to Star Trek.
I'd love a list of movie and tv quotes. I wonder if there's a book just on those?
