My "baby" graduated from high school last Saturday. This is my fourth son to go through this school, so I've been connected to the institution for 11 years. People expected me to boohoohoo big time--and it was touch and go there when the mom next to me was sobbing. But I didn't shed much more than half a tear.
Why didn't I blubber all over my husband? Well, I am--I hope--getting over pneumonia, so part of my focus was on not passing out. But I also tried to think more about the future than the past. My son was ready to leave. (And ok, after 11 years, maybe I was, too.) And kids have to grow up, right? (I wish parents didn't have to grow older at the same time, but that's a subject for a different blog.)
When I graduated from my various schools, I tried to focus on the future, too. It was time for a new challenge, as scary as that often was. The rhythm of my life changed, but I wasn't giving up my friends. I might not see them regularly, but I could stay in touch via phone and letters--and these days via the Internet.
So how about you all? Do you pull out the tissues at graduations, do you grin and party on--or do you find some middle ground?

I'm pretty sure I teared up at my 8th grade graduation. . . . but at my high school one, nope. By no means did I have a hard time in high school, but just that little bit of an outsider and all that stuff. . . so I just saw it as what was there to cry about. LOL :)

I'm not one who's quick to tears but I might cry when my baby graduates. Still, that's another 10 years away LOL!
LOL, Lois. I remember my "baby" complaining about how all the girls were crying at the 8th grade graduation--while he and pretty much the rest of the boys couldn't wait to get out of there. This high school is all male, so that probably cut way down on the waterworks at least among the graduates!
Hey, Wendy, I was 10 years younger once, too. It goes by in a heartbeat! Ack! When you're 10 years older, so will I be. Anyone have a time machine handy??
I haven't had a child graduate from anything. Actually, I haven't had a child, period. But, since I cry at Hallmark commercials and feel sorry for the Cavemen, I would probably bawl and squall!
LOL, jackietoo. I once cried at a Mork and Mindy episode--if you're old enough to know who they are! My husband looked at me like I was completely insane.
